September 20-24 is Fall Prevention Week and Other Fun Stuff
If you're caring for a senior loved one or aging parent, you're constantly concerned that they might fall. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one out of four people aged 65 and older will fall each year, and one out of five of these falls will cause a broken bone or head injury. This year, Fall Prevention Week runs from September 20 through 24. It's a great opportunity to brush up on a few tips to prevent falls for ourselves as well as our senior loved ones. Here are a few fall prevention tips for you:
Fall Prevention Tips
The best way to stay safe is to avoid falling. There are things you can do to prevent falls. Here are a few things to consider:
- Balance and exercise program: There are some exercise programs designed to help you improve your balance along with the strength of your core. Strength and excellent balance are one of the best ways to prevent a fall because you're better able to right yourself if you slip.
- Discuss your risk for falls with your doctor: Your healthcare professionals can access your risk for falls as well as help you make a plan to improve your balance.
- Check your medications: Some side effects of medication can include loss of balance as well as dizziness that can lead to falls. While you might need to take it, you do need to know the increased risk of falls.
- Vision and hearing: You need to have your hearing and vision checked each year to ensure that you can see any fall hazards.
- Tidy up around the house: From area rugs to winding cords, tripping hazards might be around your home. You need to identify as well as remove these hazards to keep yourself safe.
- Include your family: It isn't only seniors who fall and suffer the consequences. You can make it a family affair with everyone supporting each other as you take steps to prevent falls.
You can minimize your risks of falling, but if the unexpected does happen, seek help immediately.
