4 Spring Activities for Seniors to Help Them Enjoy the Season
Although seniors have varying levels of ability and mobility, all of them can enjoy spring in one way or another.
Here are a few spring activities to get you started.
Get Outside
If your senior is mobile, there's no better way to ensure they savor the delights of spring than to help them get outside. Whether you plan a trip to the botanical gardens, visit a local park, walk around the block in your own neighborhood, or even simply sit out on the porch and enjoy the view, getting out to experience the fresh spring air first-hand can do wonders for the mind.
Getting outside isn't just good for the mind, however. It's also good for the body.
No one needs exposure to the sunshine vitamin (vitamin D) quite as much as our seniors. Helping seniors get some sun can give their bodies increased abilities to retain cognitive health, fight cancer, and stave off the onset of diseases like osteoporosis and rickets.
Take in a Flower Show
Spring flower shows are a fantastic way to help seniors enjoy the sights (and smells!) of the season.
If you're in or around Milwaukee, the Mitchell Park Domes hosts special events this time of year, including flower shows! As home to unique plants from around the world, The Domes is easily one of the best local options.
This season does tend to be busy. However, just be sure to reserve tickets in advance—and if you're visiting during a time of heightened concerns for public health, be sure to wear your mask and follow the one-way directional paths through the exhibits.
We want everyone to enjoy spring safely!
Bring Spring to Seniors
If seniors are not mobile or only enjoy limited mobility, that doesn't mean they are hindered from enjoying spring.
We will just need to be more intentional about bringing spring to them.
We can help these seniors enjoy spring by
- Bringing them seasonal potted plants and cut flowers
- Opening their curtains and blinds (and perhaps even the windows) so that they can experience a full view of the changing seasons
- Situating their beds or favorite chairs so that they have unfettered views
- Taking them on long drives to witness the new greens and budding trees
Though these steps may sound small, they can make a big difference for our seniors who are less than fully mobile as they, too, herald the arrival of spring.
Get Crafty
For seniors who have the patience and ability, seasonal crafts can be a great way to help them get into the spirit of things.
When choosing a spring craft for seniors, always choose an option that
- Features bright colors
- Doesn't require intricate detail work or high levels of dexterity
- Can be completed in a single sitting without too much fuss
If you choose to do a spring craft with a group of seniors, always remember that it's a good idea to have extra helpers on hand to share in the fun and step in with a helping hand as needed.
