Chronic Pain Management
September is National Pain Awareness Month which highlights the challenges of those living with chronic pain and solutions for managing pain. During 2021 between 20.5% and 21.8% of adults in the United States had chronic pain (CDC). Pain can come in many forms and be difficult to identify and express—especially for those who are living with brain change and chronic conditions. Let’s cover a few topics about pain and strategies for managing it.
Identify
The first step when experiencing pain is to discover the source of the issue. This process can take time and effort to work with health professionals and the care team. “The most effective pain management treatment uses a combination of the 4P’s: prevention, psychological, physical, and pharmaceutical” (Crossing Rivers Health). Preventing pain from starting or getting worse includes factors we can control such as sleep, fall prevention, exercise, and nutrition. Physical management focuses on strength and balance such as physical or massage therapy.
Medications
The pharmaceutical part of the 4P’s covers medications for managing chronic pain. Ask your primary care provider for direction and clarification regarding all medications. Depending on the individual they may need medication assistance or reminders from their care partners. There are many helpful devices for reminders such as smart device alarms and pill organizers.
Care Team
Although there is no one-size-fits-all treatment for chronic pain, a supportive care team with proper training and effective communication is key to maintaining good health. It’s important to establish a good routine and stay engaged with the person they are supporting. From the 4P’s the psychological element includes learning about pain management, counseling, socialization, and relaxation techniques (Crossing Rivers Health). Consider a professional home care services provider such as Senior Helpers to assist and support your loved one.
