4 Mental Health Resources Available Online

Mental health has become an increasingly critical issue for people of all ages. In many cases, older adults, particularly those who are hospitalized or require in-home health care, may be at higher risk for a number of mental health problems. For example, while between 1 and 5% of senior adults living in the general community suffer from depression, around 13.5% of older adults who require home health care suffer from those symptoms. Getting treatment can be a serious barrier for many senior adults, who may have a hard time getting to a physical location. Fortunately, there are a number of mental health resources available online that senior adults can use.

1. Virtual Therapy Appointments

Thanks to the issues that came to light during the pandemic, more mental health care providers are offering virtual appointments. Seniors may be able to sign in online and conduct sessions via Zoom or Skype, allowing them to connect with a mental health care provider without ever having to leave the comforts of their homes. Seniors interested in those vital services should consult with their insurance company to determine what providers might be covered. Even Medicare will offer telehealth services for mental health.

2. Crisis Support Through SAMHSA

When a crisis emerges, seniors may need support quickly. SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, may provide immediate intervention assistance, including:

This crisis supports can prove incredibly valuable during difficult moments when senior adults may need additional help.

3. Webinars Through The Center Of Excellence For Behavioral Health Disparities In Aging

The Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health Disparities in Aging offers a number of webinars that help address mental health concerns for seniors, including helping older adults remain happy and safe while drinking during the holidays. These webinars can help provide caregivers with access to the resources and tools they need to provide support to their senior loved ones.

4. Apps

Apps can go a long way toward helping senior adults manage their mental health, especially if they have support from caregivers as they learn how to use those new platforms. Caregivers and seniors may want to check out apps like Headspace or Calm to help provide ongoing mental health support for struggling senior adults.
