February 7th-14th is Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week!
CHD occurs in 1 out of every 100 births every year. CHD is a catch-all phrase that covers many heart abnormalities. Do you have a loved one that was born with a heart abnormality? My nephew was born with Transposition of the Great Vessels, a potentially fatal heart malformation. At two days old, “BUG”, underwent open heart surgery. He is now a thriving and healthy 15 year- old boy. Is he closely monitored by his heart specialist? Yes! Are there certain things he cannot do? Yes! But, not many. (playing football is out) By the continued research, diagnosis and treatment for patients, like my Bug, are continually improving. Show your support by wearing RED this week!
