Happy Thanksgiving with In Home Care for Seniors

Happy Thanksgiving with In Home Care for Seniors

Thanksgiving is the holiday most known for food and spending time with those we love most.  We take the time to indulge in treats and company every year on the last Thursday of November.  We take the time to travel to visit relatives that might not live nearby.  Enjoying the company of those we love is most cherished this time of year.

This holiday season, it’s important to take the time to visit those who may not get out as often as they would like.  Our elderly loved ones do appreciate the phone call to just say hi and a visit whenever possible.  This Thanksgiving, make it a point to pick up the phone or stop in to deliver fresh food.  If at all possible, move the celebration to their home so they won’t have to leave the house

It’s always great when we can take time out to visit an elderly loved on in their home.  In some instances, this is not always possible.  When an elderly loved one lives a long distance from family, it is important to make sure that someone stops by to check on them or deliver some food this holiday season.  A professional caregiver can not only prepare a healthy meal, but also deliver the food if that is preferred.  The caregiver can also give your family peace of mind, knowing they will also make sure to visit and have a conversation that will surely keep your loved one in high spirits.

When preparing a meal for senior loved one, it is helpful to keep their special needs in mind.  Make food that is easy to chew and swallow such as mashed potatoes, squash and other soft food items.  Reduce salt on prepared food, as our elderly loved ones don’t want a spike in blood pressure or water retention.  Whenever possible, make dishes that are high in nutrition because as we age, appetites decline and foods need to provide more for the body when consumed.

Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday centered on love, conversation and togetherness.  When an elderly loved one is unable to participate in these family celebrations, bring the gathering to them, include them in a phone call, or send a compassionate caregiver to visit and spend some time.   We all have a lot to be thankful for; and this is the time of year to appreciate all that we have in life and relationships.  If we have love, we truly have it all.
