Self-Care Tips for Caregivers This Summer

Aside from the holiday season, summertime is often the busiest time of the year for caregivers. There are many events in the summer, such as BBQs in Knoxville, festivals in Clinton, and outdoor markets in Maryville. These can be great opportunities to break up the monotony of the care routine. However, all of those activities can put extra strain on the caregiver. Taking care of yourself in the summer months is critical for your well-being as well as for the older adults in your care. Here are five self-care tips for caregivers to help you get through the heat of the summer and enjoy everything this season has to offer.

5 Self-Care Tips for Caregivers This Summer

1. Invest in a reusable water bottle

Instead of using single-use plastic water bottles, invest in reusable, refillable water bottles. You can get these water bottles in all shapes, styles, and sizes, so look for one that appeals to you. Many caregivers like to carry large water jugs that hold the total amount of water they should drink for the day (a minimum of 64 ounces). That way, you can fill the water bottle up in the morning with the goal of finishing it by bedtime. 

2. Slow down during peak-heat hours

Tennessee usually reaches peak temperatures for the day between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. If you can, try to schedule rest time during this period. Making this a time to catch up on a favorite television show, lay down for a nap, or relax in an air-conditioned coffee shop is ideal. It gets you out of the sun and allows you time to rest during the day. That's good for your body and your mental health. 

3. Seek out support services

Consider seeking out more support services during the summer months. Many caregivers want to make their own summer plans to go on vacation or spend time with kids who are out of school. Scheduling time with support services can give you the break you need without sacrificing the care you give to an older adult in your life. 

4. Look for indoor activities to keep cool

While it may be tempting to soak up the summer sun, it can quickly become too much of a good thing. Look for activities that allow you to get out of the sun and into air conditioning during the day. Local senior activity centers can be excellent places to find activities for both seniors and their caregivers. 

5. Always carry sunscreen and reapply often

Remembering to apply sunscreen every morning can be tricky. Try to keep a bottle in your purse or the car so you can apply it as needed. You'll also want to reapply it every hour or so, and more often if you are getting into the water.
