Where to Put Holiday Decorations Away (Besides the Attic)
Many seniors have amassed an impressive collection of lights, ornaments, and other holiday decorations over the years, but getting them into and out of the attic may no longer be a feasible option. Here are six helpful tips for storing your holiday decorations to keep your holiday season safer and easier to manage.
Store Decorations in Your Basement
Basements often provide even more storage space than attics, and they can be easier to access. Although this option will only work if you are still able to manage stairs, many seniors are able to handle average stairs for much longer than attic ladders.
Utilize Closet Space
Storing decorations in a closet can be an ideal option for keeping your holiday decorations on the same floor as the rest of your home. If you do not currently have enough room to store everything in one closet, you can try moving other items around to dedicate several shelves or an entire unused closet to your holiday decorations.
Store Decorations in Your Garage
Many garages offer plenty of space for storing most types of holiday decorations. Even a few feet of extra space on one end of your garage can provide plenty of space to pile boxes.
Choose Smaller Boxes
No matter where you decide to store your holiday decorations, keeping them in various smaller boxes, bins, or other containers will make it easier to manage than sticking to one or two large, heavy containers. Smaller boxes simplify lifting and carrying your decorations, and you also have more options for fitting them into a smaller space.
Choose Natural Decorations
Using real Christmas trees, wreaths, garlands, strings of real cranberries, and other natural decors can significantly cut down on the number of decorations that you actually have to find a place to store. The beauty and fresh scents of these items can enhance any decorating scheme, and choosing new items each year allows for even more creativity. Replacing some of your fake decorations with compostable real ones may mean that you only need a smaller space to store your used recyclable Christmas decorations.
Don't Be Afraid to Ask for Assistance
Storing your holiday decorations someplace where you can easily manage them on your own can be an ideal solution when you are attempting to live as independently as possible, but there's nothing wrong with asking for help if your attic is your only option or other potential locations do not work much better for you. Most family members or neighbors will not mind lifting your boxes for you after the holidays, and you may even be able to enlist the help of a local organization that provides volunteer or paid services to assist seniors with putting up and taking down decorations.
