6 Most Common Fraud Schemes Affecting Seniors

Seniors often fall victim to and are the primary target of digital fraud. The complexity and variations of these scams can make them difficult to spot, making information and awareness vital tools in combating these fraudulent schemes. Senior Helpers outlines some of the most common scams that prey specifically on seniors. Our goal is to provide clear descriptions and actionable tips on how to recognize and avoid them. We hope to empower seniors with the right information to protect themselves while navigating the digital world.

1. The Grandparent Scam

One of the most prevalent scams targeting seniors is the “Grandparent Scam.” This ploy involves a con artist pretending to be a grandchild in distress, tricking the unsuspecting grandparent into sending money to resolve a fabricated crisis. To protect themselves, seniors can independently confirm the “emergency” with other family members before sending any money. They should never share personal or financial information over the phone, especially if the caller initiated the conversation.

2. The Medicare/Health Insurance Scam

In the Medicare/Health Insurance Scam, fraudsters pose as Medicare representatives to trick seniors into providing their personal information. They then use it for identity theft. Seniors should remember that real Medicare employees never call and ask for sensitive personal data. It is always safer to hang up and call the number on the back of your Medicare card to verify the call's legitimacy.

3. The Lottery/Sweepstakes Scam

This scam involves con artists informing seniors they have won a lottery or sweepstakes and need to make a payment to unlock the supposed prize. To avoid falling victim to this scheme, seniors should keep in mind that legitimate lotteries and sweepstakes don't require you to pay a fee to claim your winnings. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

4. The Romance Scam

Romance scams are growing increasingly common. Here, scammers create fake profiles on dating websites, build trust with seniors, and then use that trust to exploit them financially. Seniors can avoid this scam by being wary of online love interests who ask for money, especially those who claim to be overseas and require funds for travel or emergencies.

5. The IRS Impersonation Scam

In this scheme, scammers impersonate IRS agents and claim that seniors owe back taxes that must be paid back promptly. Seniors should know that the IRS never calls to demand immediate payment over the phone and will always contact you by mail first. If in doubt, hang up and call the IRS directly to check.

6. The Tech Support Scam

This scam involves fraudsters posing as tech support personnel. They claim they have detected viruses or other malware on the senior's computer. They then trick the victim into paying for unnecessary or non-existent services. Never give control of your computer to a third party unless you can confirm it is a legitimate representative of a computer support team with whom you are already a customer.
