Staying Safe in Extreme Summer Heat

Summer is a wonderful time of year, but extreme heat poses serious risks, especially for seniors. High temperatures can lead to heat-related illnesses, which can be life-threatening if not managed properly. Seniors and their caregivers need to know how to stay safe during these hot months.

Be Sure to Hydrate

Staying hydrated is one of the most important things you can do during extreme heat. Our bodies lose a lot of water through sweat, and seniors are particularly at risk of dehydration. Drinking water throughout the day is essential. Since seniors lose their sense of thirst as they age, this can present a challenge.

To maintain hydration, always carry a water bottle with you when you go out, even for short trips. Eating water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges can also help keep you hydrated. It's best to avoid alcohol and caffeine, as these drinks can dehydrate you. Instead, opt for water or fruit juices.

Recognize the Signs of Heat-Related Illnesses

Learn to recognize the signs of heat-related illnesses so you can take action quickly. The most common heat-related illnesses are heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Watch for symptoms such as dizziness, fainting, rapid heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, confusion, and disorientation. If you or someone else experiences these symptoms, take immediate action:

  • Move to a cooler place right away and drink water or an electrolyte solution.
  • Use a cool, damp cloth on your skin to help lower your body temperature.
  • Seek medical attention if symptoms don't quickly improve.

Create a Cool, Comfortable Environment at Home

Keeping your home cool is another vital step to staying safe during extreme heat. Even if you don't have air conditioning, there are ways to stay comfortable. Use fans to circulate air, but remember that fans alone might not be enough in extreme heat. If you have air conditioning, use it during the hottest parts of the day. Close off rooms you aren't using to save on energy.

Keep blinds and curtains closed to block out the sun and keep your home cooler. Taking a cool shower or bath can quickly lower your body temperature. Choose lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton to wear and stay cooler.

Check on Elderly Neighbors

Extreme heat is particularly dangerous for seniors living alone. Make a point to check on elderly neighbors and ensure they are okay. During heat waves, community support can make a significant difference. Call or visit them regularly during heat waves. Offer assistance with grocery shopping or other errands to reduce their need to go out in the heat. Make sure they know where to go to cool down if their home gets too hot, such as local cooling centers or other community resources.
