Now that summer is officially on its way, it can be a very mood-boosting time for seniors. Sunlight itself has been proven to make a person feel better, so seniors can benefit from that. In addition, the warm weather is also easier on the joints and can help seniors to be free from aches and pains that affect them during the other months.
Summer is a good time to take advantage of the warm weather and try out some summer activities for seniors. They can go for these activities solo, if they have an in-home caregiver who can accompany them. Or they can get together a group of other seniors who might also be interested. If you can take a fun activity and turn it into a social event, then it can really give the senior a feeling of wellbeing. Here are some options:
Bookstore Events
If you have a local bookstore, then it probably has some upcoming events for the summer. They might have some authors coming to read from their books or to talk about the topics that interest them. Most bookstores will give you a list of their events on a pamphlet or on the internet. These are all suitable for seniors who will enjoy getting out, getting a coffee and maybe buying a book. Bookstore events might also be a good way to meet other seniors who are interested in the same things. Plus, there isn't too much walking around at this kind of event, so they're perfect for seniors who may have some mobility issues.
Art Class
It's never too late to start being creative! If there's a school or a college nearby, they may have some summer art classes that the senior can enroll for, such as drawing, painting, pottery, sculpture or creative writing. The senior can look through the catalogue and figure out which of the classes being offered look interesting to them. This is a great way for the senior to stay mentally active as well. They'll be looking at works of art or reading books of poetry, both of which can be enriching to the individual. Plus, as seniors, they'll be in a good place to contribute to class discussions with their varied life experiences.
Cultural Events
It's a good idea to keep an eye out for cultural events in your town which your senior might enjoy. Are there any new museum exhibits that might interest them? Are there any art galleries with interesting shows? How about those free outdoor movie events which usually feature classics that the senior might love? There might also be some walking tours which showcase something special about the senior's city without being too hectic. Cultural events are especially great because they are thought-provoking and will encourage the senior to stay mentally active.
Flea Markets/Farmer's Markets
These can be a great way to idle away a Sunday morning. Keep an eye out for upcoming flea markets and farmer's markets in your neighborhood. Your senior will enjoy rummaging through old clothes, knickknacks, furniture etc. at a flea market or buying some fresh produce at a farmer's market. If the senior likes to cook, then they can get the ingredients at the farmer's market, cook and have a little garden party with friends. Even just a little tea party with a few macaroons or sandwiches can give seniors a way to reconnect with each other and enjoy a late summer afternoon.
