What Should Seniors Do to Stay Safe When There is Snow and Ice on the Ground?

As the temperatures start to drop, it is important that seniors take extra precautions when venturing out in snow or icy conditions. Slipping on snow and ice can cause serious injury to older adults. In some cases, those injuries can even be life-threatening. Furthermore, seniors may be at greater risk for hypothermia if they stay out in icy temperatures for too long without adequate protection from the elements. Seniors can take several precautions to stay safe when there is snow and ice on the ground.

1. Wear Appropriate Clothing

Before heading outside, seniors should make sure that they are dressed appropriately for the conditions outdoors. Seniors should wear several layers of clothing to keep warm and make sure their heads, hands, and feet are all covered. If they plan on being outside for an extended period of time, wear a hat and gloves or mittens as well as boots with good traction on the soles.

2. Wear Shoes with Good Traction

Make sure to wear shoes with good traction when walking on snow and ice. Shoes that are made from leather or rubber provide the best grip in these conditions. Avoid wearing shoes with smooth soles, such as dress shoes or indoor slippers, which can easily slide on snow and ice.

3. Use Handrails and Walk Slowly

Seniors should also hold onto railings or walls when they are navigating stairs or icy pathways. They should be mindful of their footing and take small steps as they move around to reduce the risk of slipping and falling. Simple precautions can go a long way toward decreasing the risk of a fall.

4. Avoid Slippery Surfaces

If possible, avoid walking on slippery surfaces altogether. Try to walk on cleared paths or sidewalks whenever possible. In particularly icy conditions, seniors may want to remain indoors until the ice melts or is cleared away.

5. Have Someone Help You

Seniors should not be afraid to ask for assistance if they know they will have to navigate slippery or icy surfaces! Let a friend or family member know that they need to go out and what assistance they will likely need. Having someone to walk with them can significantly decrease the chances of a fall.

6. Check In Frequently with Loved Ones

If seniors are going to be out in the snow and ice, make sure to check in with them frequently. Ask the seniors where they are, their plans, and when they plan on returning home. This can help monitor the seniors' whereabouts and ensure that they arrive back safely.
