How to Recognize the Signs of SAD in Your Partner

Do you notice shifts in your partner's mood or behavior as the seasons change? This could be due to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression that occurs at the same time each year, usually in the winter. It often starts in the fall and continues into the winter months. The reduced sunlight can affect your body's internal clock and lead to feelings of depression. Early intervention is vital, especially for seniors, to ensure their well-being and quality of life.

Common Causes and Risk Factors

SAD is mainly caused by a lack of sunlight, which can disrupt the body's internal clock and affect serotonin levels—a neurotransmitter that affects mood. Risk factors include living far from the equator, having a family history of SAD or other forms of depression, and being female.

Why Seniors Might Be More Susceptible

Seniors often have less exposure to natural sunlight, especially if they have mobility issues. Their daily routines are less likely to include outdoor activities, which can exacerbate the symptoms of SAD. As we age, our bodies produce less melatonin, a hormone linked to sleep patterns and mood.

Signs to Look Out For in Your Partner

The following are common indications of SAD. The list isn't limited, however, and it's necessary to consult with a physician for a proper diagnosis and to rule out other health problems.

Mood Changes

One of the first signs of SAD is a noticeable change in mood. Look out for:

  • Persistent sadness or depression: Your partner may seem down or hopeless most of the time.
  • Increased irritability or anxiety: They may get annoyed or anxious over minor issues.

Altered Sleep Patterns

Changes in sleep can also be an indicator:

  • Difficulty sleeping: They might find it hard to fall asleep or stay asleep.
  • Oversleeping: Seniors also sleep more than usual but still feel tired.

Changes in Appetite and Weight

Watch for shifts in eating habits:

  • Increased cravings for carbohydrates: They may crave more sweets and starchy foods.
  • Noticeable weight gain or loss: These cravings can lead to weight changes.

Loss of Interest in Activities

Activities they once enjoyed might no longer seem appealing:

  • Withdrawal from social activities: They may decline invitations to social gatherings.
  • Lack of interest in hobbies or pastimes: Their favorite hobbies no longer bring them joy.

Decreased Energy Levels

A general lack of energy can also be a red flag:

  • Fatigue and lethargy: They may feel tired all the time, even after sleeping.
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions: Everyday tasks may become overwhelming or confusing.

Monitoring Yourself for SAD

While you're keeping an eye on your partner, it's also important to assess yourself for these signs. Self-awareness is a key part of maintaining mental health. If you notice any of these symptoms, don't hesitate to seek professional help.
