A Guide to Hearing Aids: What Every Senior Should Know

Hearing loss is an issue that affects millions of seniors in the United States. In fact, it's estimated that more than 25% of adults between 65 and 74 have some degree of hearing loss, and those numbers increase as seniors get older. Hearing aids are an important part of managing hearing loss and can help seniors stay connected to their family and friends by improving communication.

Types of Hearing Aids

There are four main types of hearing aids to choose from Behind-the-Ear (BTE), In-the-Ear (ITE), In-the-Canal (ITC), or Completely in the Canal (CIC).

  • BTE devices sit behind the ear with tubing connecting it directly to the ear canal, which helps amplify sound better for those who have moderate or severe hearing loss.
  • ITE devices fit inside your outer ear with all components contained within one unit, making them ideal for those who suffer from milder levels of hearing loss.
  • ITC devices also fit inside your outer ear but contain fewer components due to their smaller size compared to ITEs.
  • CIC models are even smaller and fit deep inside your inner ear canal, making them almost invisible once inserted.

Your doctor can provide you with more information and insights into which hearing aid is right for your needs.

Signs You May Need Hearing Aids

There are several signs that it may be time to have your hearing evaluated.

  • You have difficulty following conversations.
  • You struggle when trying to hear the TV or radio, even though it's set at a comfortable volume.
  • People around you often complain about how loudly you're listening to things.
  • Sound often appears muffled.

Sometimes, your loved ones will notice you struggling to hear before you do. Talking to your doctor can help you better evaluate when it might be time to try hearing aids.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Hearing Aids

Each hearing aid choice is based on the individual's needs and preferences.

Lifestyle

Your lifestyle can have a huge impact on the right hearing aids for your needs. For example, if you live a very active lifestyle, you might need an option like a waterproof BTE.

Discretion

In some cases, you may want to keep your hearing loss as discrete as possible. CICs are much less obvious than other models, so they may work better for seniors who want to keep hearing loss quiet.

Comfort

Seniors with sensory sensitivities may find that comfort tops their list of important factors when selecting a hearing aid. Checking out the different feel and fit of each model can help make that decision easier.

Cost

For many seniors, the cost is the determining factor when selecting a hearing aid. You may need to stick to your budget. Keep in mind, however, that cheaper hearing aids may not have the same features or options, which means that they may be less comfortable or provide lower-quality sound control.

Hearing Aid Maintenance

Hearing aids need regular maintenance to ensure they remain working correctly for a long time. This includes changing the batteries every few weeks, cleaning them regularly, and getting them checked by an audiologist at least once a year for any necessary repairs or adjustments. It's also important to use specific wax guards or filters to help prevent the build-up of earwax, which can block sound from reaching the ear canal & cause damage over time.
