How to Show Appreciation for Elderly Relative's Hired Caregivers

Caregivers for your elderly loved one provide an incredibly important service that can't be understated. Families often rely heavily on these caregivers to ensure their family member receives quality care in their home, and it's natural to want to express appreciation for the work they do. Showing your gratitude for your senior loved one's hired caregivers is a great way to make sure they are appreciated and understood as valued members of the family, and National Caregivers Day is a great opportunity to do exactly that.

When Is National Caregivers Day?

National Caregivers Day is a day of recognition for caregivers across the United States and beyond. It takes place each year on the third Friday in February, giving you an opportunity to take time out of your day to show appreciation and thankfulness to those that care for elderly family members within the comfort of their own homes.

7 Ways to Show Appreciation to Caregivers of Seniors

1. Praise Them for Specific Actions They've Done

Expressing thanks by applauding specific, concrete actions they have taken that made a positive impact on your loved one's life will mean more than any gift could ever provide. Instead of a broad "thank you for your help," point out tangible ways they've improved your loved one's life and helped them.

2. Make Their Job as Easy as Possible

Another way to appreciate your elderly loved one's caregiver is by doing all you can to make their job as easy as possible. You can do this in a variety of ways, such as:

  • Know your senior loved one's needs versus wants and prioritize your requests accordingly
  • Make it easy for them to access essential items in the home that your loved one needs
  • Be on time if the caregiver needs to be at your home at a certain time or meet you somewhere

3. Ask Them How You Can Support Them

Caregivers may feel more appreciated and respected when asked how they need help in caring for your senior loved one, rather than dictating what needs to be done. Ask questions like, "What are some of the challenges you face while caring for my loved one?" or "What can I do to make this easier on you?" This allows your senior loved one's caregiver the opportunity to express their thoughts and feelings about their role. It also gives family members insight into what goes on day-to-day with those who care for our seniors.

4. Give Them Time Off or a Break

Caregivers often take on long shifts and provide large amounts of emotional, physical, and mental comfort for seniors every day, so it can benefit both parties involved if family members offer respite care. This can mean taking some additional responsibilities off the caregiver's plate or giving them longer breaks in-between tasks — whatever works best within your resources.

5. Write a Surprise Thank-You Note

Taking the time to write about how much you appreciate all that they do may seem small, but it can mean so much more than words can express. A little appreciation expressed through written words can go a long way!

6. Give Them a Gift Card

A great thing about gift cards is that they let the caregivers take some time off in their personal lives from their daily chores and activities, allowing them to enjoy themselves and treat themselves as a much-needed reward for all of their hard work. Consider gifting them with a restaurant gift card, house cleaning service, spa day package, or something else you know they will appreciate.

7. Run Errands For Them

Many caregivers spend a lot of their time running errands, such as picking up medications or items for the senior loved one's home. Volunteer to do some of these errands for them so that they can spend more time directly helping your elderly relative.
