5 Fun Ways for Families With Children to Give Back to the Community During the Holiday Season

National Giving Month celebrates people giving their time, expertise, or money to help others. Are you wondering how your family can get involved in this celebration of generosity in Georgetown, Lexington, Nicholasville, or Shelbyville this year? We've rounded up five fun ways your whole family can get involved in the Lexington area and spread some extra joy this holiday season!

1. Go Shopping With Seniors in Your Community

Do you have a friend, neighbor, or someone else you know who a senior is? Unless they have a caring senior companion who can take them out shopping, they might be missing out on the excitement and joy of shopping during the holiday season. Why not invite them to join your family for a festive shopping expedition to visit the Fayette Mall or Hamburg Pavilion with your family? Don't forget the hot chocolate afterward!

2. Visit a Nursing Home

Seniors without in-home care often end up in nursing homes. It can feel lonely there, especially when they don't have family nearby. Why not visit them with your family? Bring games to play, storybooks to read, carols to sing, small, inexpensive gifts, or homemade treats (ask the staff beforehand). If you have a green thumb, small plant cuttings are always welcome gifts. So are handmade cards, children's art, puzzle magazines, or jigsaw puzzles to share as a group, etc.,

3. Volunteer to Help With an Event

With so many festivals, fairs, and other holiday season events going on, volunteers are probably at a premium. Check with organizers to see how you and your family can help. They may need help with decorating, setting up booths, arranging goodies or supplies, putting up posters, or any number of other tasks that go into making an event a success.

4. Go Caroling

Join other families for a caroling extravaganza! Check with local Christmas tree farms or the organizers of local festivals or craft fairs to see if they would like your group to add to the festivities. If not, how about caroling at a church or around the neighborhood? Most homes welcome carolers and the seasonal joy they bring.

5. Decorate for Seniors

Call local senior centers and ask if they'd like help decorating for holidays. If they say yes, organize a group of family members and friends to help put up outside decorations at the center. This is a fun activity that will brighten the lives of seniors and everyone else who passes by. When you get done outside, don't be surprised if they ask for help decorating the inside, too!
