4 New Year's Resolutions for Social Fun and Companionship

It's never too late to enjoy a new hobby, make new friends, or have fun socializing! Has a senior loved one made a resolution to socialize more and have more fun this year? If so, here are four new year's resolutions for seniors that will help them avoid the health concerns of loneliness.

1. Take Up Line Dancing

The Oswegoland Senior and Community Center (OSCC) offers regular line dances for both beginners and pros. This type of dancing helps with memory, balance, coordination, as well as stamina. Not only that, but it's a lot of fun and a great way to meet new friends! Why not encourage seniors to join the fun? The dances take place every Friday morning from 10 AM – 11 AM.  A modest donation of $2 is requested from attendees.

2. Sing Your Heart Out

There are senior centers that also offer singing and socializing for musically-inclined seniors. For example, group singing practices resume in March and will take place on Fridays from 10:00 AM to noon at the Upper Level of the OSCC.

3. Go for a Walk with Friends

Seniors can also get their daily exercise by enjoying a good walk with old and new friends while avoiding the snow, ice, freezing temperatures, and other hazards of winter.

4. Take Up an Exercise Program

According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), physical activity is essential to healthy aging. They recommend aerobic activities plus muscle-strengthening exercises and balance activities every week for seniors. They stress that even a little bit of exercise is better than none and encourage all seniors to get as much exercise as they can.

Fortunately, the OSCC also offers several exercise programs to help seniors maintain their strength, balance, and endurance while having fun and meeting new people.

  • Seniors can improve their balance and strength with a Chair Exercise, either in person or through Zoom classes.
  • Practice Gentle Yoga using a chair and modified positions personalized for each participant.
  • If a senior suffers from arthritis or joint stiffness, they may benefit from the slow, fluid movements of Tai Chi. This form of exercise helps with a senior's coordination, balance, as well as agility.
  • Strength and Endurance Training (AKA Heart & Bones) helps seniors improve their mobility, balance, bone density, joint flexibility, muscle function, and metabolism. These exercises can be done using weights, resistance bands, or just a senior's own body weight.

The mental benefits of these ideas for new year's resolutions for seniors almost outweigh the physical benefits. A senior who exercises regularly will usually sleep better, have more motivation to get out of bed in the morning, enjoy more self-confidence, stay connected, and be more engaged with others.
