Stroke Awareness: Caregiver Action Plan

May is recognized globally as Stroke Awareness Month, a time dedicated to enhancing public understanding of this severe health condition. As caregivers for senior loved ones, you must be aware of the warning signs of a stroke and know the necessary steps to take when such signs appear. The quicker we can respond, the better the recovery outlook is for our loved ones.

What Are Strokes?

A stroke is a sudden interruption in the blood supply to the brain. It can be caused by an obstruction, such as a blood clot, or the rupture of a blood vessel. Certain risk factors can significantly increase the chances of experiencing a stroke. These include age, family history, high blood pressure, and smoking. Given the potential severity and lasting impacts, understanding the warning signs and knowing what action to take can greatly influence a patient's recovery process.

Warning Signs of a Stroke

Not all strokes look the same, but they often share common warning signs. These include sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body, difficulty speaking or understanding speech, dizziness, loss of balance, and severe, unusual headaches. A handy way to remember this is by using the acronym FAST: Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call emergency services. Pinpointing these signs early and acting quickly can significantly improve the chances of recovery.

Caregiver Action Plan

If you suspect a stroke, the first step is to call emergency services immediately. While waiting for help, keep the senior as comfortable as possible. Reassure them calmly, helping them to sit or lie down in a safe position, and monitor their symptoms closely.

Gather their medical information including any medication they might be on, their recent medical history, and any known allergies. This can be very useful for the medical team when they arrive.

Once medical help is at the scene, cooperate with them fully, providing all the necessary information you have gathered.

After the initial treatment comes the recovery. This often involves therapy, medication, and regular check-ups. As a caregiver, your role is to provide support, encouragement, and assistance with their prescribed recovery plan.
