Staying Connected With Technology in the New Year

Maintaining relationships can enrich our lives, offer emotional support, and provide a sense of belonging. Fortunately, technology makes it easier to keep these vital connections strong. Here's what you need to know: how, as a senior, to leverage technology to stay connected with friends and family.

Video Calling

Video calling is the next best thing to being with a loved one in person. Whether it's a scheduled weekly check-in or a spontaneous chat, video calls help bridge distances by making it feel like we're in the same room. To get started, you first need to choose a platform. Zoom, Skype, and FaceTime are popular options for video calling. For Zoom and Skype, you must download the app on your phone or computer, create an account, and use email or phone contacts to connect with loved ones. FaceTime is pre-installed on Apple devices like iPhones and iPads. Simply open the FaceTime app and add a contact to start a call.

During your call, ensure the area is well-lit so you can see each other clearly, and pay attention to your device's camera angle. A few fun additions to your call include sharing photos, having coffee, or even playing a virtual game.

Social Media

While it has its drawbacks, social media is a fantastic way to stay connected, share memories, and keep up with loved ones. Platforms like Facebook and Instagram are user-friendly and suitable for seniors. Creating an account is simple and only requires basic information like your name, email or phone number, and a password. Adjust your privacy settings to control who can see your information and posts.

When using social media, using a strong password and being cautious of connecting with people you don't know is essential. Adding a profile picture can make it easier for friends and family to recognize you.

Online Communities

Online communities offer a place to participate in discussions, share interests, and form new friendships. There are forums and groups based on hobbies, interests, or experiences specific to seniors. Websites like Reddit, for example, have thousands of channels (called "subs"), and there's something for everyone, even seniors.

Getting involved is straightforward. Download the app, register by creating a username and password, and then search for topics that interest you. Participating in these communities helps you learn new skills, stay informed about current events, and even find support for managing health concerns.

Video Games

Gaming isn't just for kids! Console or PC-based online video games allow you to play against strangers or team up with loved ones. Getting started depends on whether you have an Xbox, Playstation, or gaming computer. Most games require your friends and family to be on the same gaming platform, so do a little research before making a purchase.
