The San Jose neighborhood has a lot of history, beginning its history in the mid-1910s, when local businessman Claude Nolan formed the San Jose Company to buy up over 1,000 acres of land outside of Jax’s city limits at the time, near the St. Johns River. Then the land was sold many times and the town we see today is not as developed as planned, but many things were done by the owner companies throughout the years till San Jose was absorbed by Jacksonville during consolidation.

Between all those years many houses were built, the old San Jose Hotel which was once the community’s centerpiece, schools, the Episcopal Church, and even a Country Club and golf club. Today, the San Jose neighborhood is a thriving community made up of mostly single-family residential properties. The old San Jose Hotel is now the centerpiece to the riverfront campus of The Bolles School. San Jose Episcopal Church and Day School operates in its original building, and one of the former entrance gates can still be seen along San Jose Boulevard.

Verona Park is located in the San Jose area of the city near the Bolles School, on land that was part of the San Jose Plantation in the late 1700’s. The developer of San Jose dedicated the parkland to Duval County in three plats recorded in 1925-26. The community exhibits a Spanish theme, with its street and park names and Mediterranean-style architecture. From 1925-27, buildings near the park such as the elegant San Jose Hotel (now Bolles School) and the Alfred I. Dupont residence (Epping Forest) were constructed. Verona Park follows a creek that runs westerly from St. Augustine Rd. across San Jose Blvd. to the St. Johns River. Surrounded by attractive homes, most of the park is in a natural state, with the exception of the eastern end that provides six benches and playground equipment for young children.

San José is one of the parishes established by the far-sighted Archbishop Joseph Hurley who recognized the potential for growth between downtown Jacksonville and Mandarin. The new community was established in 1959 with a congregation meeting for Mass in the gym of the Bolles School. Before long, nearly 300 families were attending the Sunday Masses. On June 29, 1959 San Jose Catholic was formally established as a parish with Father Mortimer Danaher as the founding pastor. In 1961, with the arrival of the Sisters of Mercy from Ireland, San Jose Catholic School welcomed its first students. In 1968, new construction continued with the building of the Shrine of the Holy Family, completed in late 1968. The next addition to San Jose Parish was the Cultural Center which was completed in 1974. It keep growing till today, and on July 1, 2019 Fr. Remek Blaszkowski was appointed to lead San Jose Parish.
