Easy Tips to Work Out Your Eyes and In Home Senior Care
It has become very clear that daily exercise, no matter how small of an activity, is vital for keeping our senior loved ones strong and healthy. One part of our body that we may neglect to exercise is our eyes. There are ways to strengthen eye muscles, improve focus and stimulate the vision center of the brain. There are some easy tips to work out your eyes and maintain optimal vision that won’t take up much time and are simple to perform every day.
A daily massage on the body would be wonderful to get, but also impractical. Unlike body massages, a massage to the eyes is something that can done daily. Warm hands by rubbing palms together and place on closed eyes for five seconds. Repeat three times. Using fingertips to gently pat and rub the eyes and forehead are stimulating to the skin. Be sure to wash hands thoroughly and using light pressure, gently massage closed eyelids with circular movements of the fingers for one to two minutes.
Another easy work out tip for the eyes is for practicing focusing. Sit in a chair facing a wall and place your thumb about a foot away from the face and focus on it. Next, focus on an object that is about ten feet away. Switching from the near and far object are great for strengthening the ability to focus.
Using the thumb as a focal object again, place it near the face and focus on it as it pulls further away. Using any type of object for focusing close and following it as it moves away and around you is a helpful way to practice focusing. Drawing a figure eight with the eyes is also a wonderful practice tool and can be done for a few minutes each day.
Directional eye movement exercise is another easy tip to work out the eyes. Simply look up as high as possible without moving the head, then to the left, down, and right. Do this several times then switch it up, by looking ahead, up, left, down, right. Repeat the cycle a few times. Rolling the eyes by looking up and slowly circle ten times clockwise and counterclockwise is also a helpful exercise.
Getting enough sleep is vital for eye health. Be sure to get enough shut eye to allow the eyes to fully heal, rest, and repair. Mini-naps during the day are also very helpful when a full night’s sleep is not always possible. Take ten minute breaks from reading, television watching, or working on the computer for every 50 minutes of that type of activity. Clean eating and staying hydrated with lots of rest are also key ingredients to living well and easy to maintain with the help of compassionate caregivers either in the family or from Senior Helpers of Clearwater.
