Raising Awareness on Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) with Our Elderly

Yesterday at Monarch Spring Meadows in Trumbull, I had the profound opportunity to engage with residents about a crucial health topic—Deep Vein Thrombosis…  especially pertinent as we observe DVT Awareness Month.

Deep Vein Thrombosis is an under-discussed yet serious condition that disproportionately affects the elderly. The risk of DVT naturally increases with age due to decreased mobility, underlying chronic diseases, and other health-related factors.

In light of this, it's vital we discuss not just the risks but also preventive measures and signs to watch for:

Preventive Measures:

1. Stay Active:  even simple leg exercises while seated are helpful to improve blood flow.

2. Hydrate Well: Staying hydrated helps prevent blood from thickening.

3. Compression stockings when traveling long traveling long distances

It’s crucial for our community to discuss these preventive strategies to ensure the health and well-being of our seniors. Let's continue this vital conversation and ensure our elderly are not only aware but also empowered to take charge of their health.
