Traveling With A Senior: Six Tips For Easy Airport Troubleshooting During Layovers

Navigating airports during a layover can be stressful for anyone. Navigating them with a senior loved one, on the other hand, can make it even more challenging.  Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to make your journey easier. Are you looking for strategies that can help make your layovers easier? Consider these key tips.

Tip #1: Plan For Plenty Of Time On Layovers

When booking your tickets, make sure to factor in plenty of time (at least two hours) between flights, just in case there are delays or complications. This will give you ample time to navigate the airport, get to your next gate, check in your bags, and more. Also, if you book flights that have long layovers, you can have more time to rest, if needed.

Tip #2: Pack Light

Consider what items absolutely need to go in your carry-on and how you can make sure that you have everything you need. Keep in mind that you will need to manage those bags during your layover, so it may be useful to pack as lightly as possible. Make sure, however, that you have the items you need most, including your senior loved one's medications, a change of clothes for each of you, and entertainment items for the flight. If you need to travel with medical devices, make sure you know what you need to check in and what you will need to carry with you.

Tip #3: Use Airport Assistance Services

Many airports offer free or low-cost assistance services for seniors. This includes wheelchair assistance and help with navigating the airport. Be sure to take advantage of these services if needed — it will make your layovers much easier.

Tip #4: Bring A Travel Companion, If Needed

Having a travel companion with you can be a great help, especially for those with visual or mobility challenges. Consider whether you may need an additional companion to accompany you when traveling with a senior loved one.

Tip #5: Eat Well And Stay Hydrated

It's important to stay energized and hydrated while you're traveling. Make sure to pack snacks and water to sustain you and your senior loved one during the flight and layovers. If you know that you'll have a long layover ahead, consider purchasing food at the airport.

Tip #6: Utilize Airline Amenities

Many airlines have amenities like pillows, blankets, and charging stations that you can take advantage of. Ask the airline representatives if they have any special accommodations for seniors. Consider calling ahead of time to discover what amenities each airline has to offer, especially during long layovers.
