Getting the Most Out of a Visit

It is not uncommon to find yourself struggling with what to say and do when you’re visiting with an elderly loved one. Things like memory care and cognitive impairment can make it additionally challenging as well. The best advice might seem contradictory, but the best approach is to both get creative, while still keeping it simple.

It is never a bad idea to first start things off with fun. If, for instance, your elderly loved one was an avid card player when younger, their ability as a card shark will probably still come easily to them. Consider what your loved one enjoyed and think of ways you can share it during your visit.

Stimulating memories is another way to spark wonderful stories and smiles. Yearbooks, scrapbooks, photo albums, and other mementos of the past can help your loved one to reminisce and share their legacy with others. You may also learn something new about them in the process!

Working on a project together can also be a very rewarding time. Consider an activity like assembling a photo album or working on a scrapbook together. You could also engage in something ongoing like a large scale puzzle or book of word problems.

Another great idea is getting out and about. The opportunity to experience a different environment is a welcome activity for most elders. Mobility must be considered, of course, as well as factors like energy level. Take a walk around the neighborhood or through a park, or perhaps organize a trip to the museum or a local art gallery.
