Home Security for Seniors
For seniors living at home, a major concern is home security and safety. The possibility of violent crime or an incident like fire or other catastrophe is ever present. Older bodies may not be as capable of recognizing the signs of danger or responding to emergencies as well, so it is important to consider these limitations when looking for a home security system for an older adult living at home.
A system with remote activation is a great idea for seniors who may have mobility issues, or have experienced a fall or can’t otherwise reach their alarm system. With a remote controlled alarm system, the remote can activate or deactivate it from any room in the house, allowing them to keep it bedside or on their person and remove the need of accessing a wall panel.
Many alarms use a loud, repeating tone to alert occupants of the danger to a home. A smoke alarm will start loudly blaring, something any bad home cook is familiar with. But for seniors with hearing or mental status issues, a sound, no matter how loud it is, might go completely unnoticed. Alarm systems with visual aids, such as bright strobing lights, are available and could be a good solution for a senior.
Emergency alert systems are available for seniors as well. Falls are the number one reason seniors end up in the ER, and with one of these, all you have to do is press the button on it and help is summoned. The monitoring company then dispatches emergency services with all the pertinent info of the senior who summoned them.
