Long weekends and summer days are perfect for visiting friends, family, and travel destinations close and far. Such activities, while fun and exciting, also pose challenges for our senior citizens here in the Mesa area. Here, we will explore some of our client's challenges in traveling and hosting visitors and provide ideas to make it easier.
Day Trips
The season abounds with opportunities to explore Cave Creek and the surrounding region. Day trips can be fun; whether it's a visit to a nearby metropolis or meeting some friends, they are quick jaunts packed with activity.
Planning is vital in a successful trip. Whether your client is the driver or a passenger, know the routes to the destination, and plan more than one route. Holiday weekends often have higher traffic levels; getting around traffic snarls will keep the trip stress-free. Having the car checked out is good, ensuring fluid levels are adequate, tire pressure is suitable, and the tank is full. Often our senior clients are less comfortable with online maps and navigation; help them feel comfortable with this technology and planning their travel. Having roadside assistance alleviates the worry of any mechanical issues along the way.
For seniors taking mass transit, assist the older adult in online purchases or reservations—printing out receipts and itineraries help. Finally, know any planned attraction hours, entry fees, or other information necessary to make the day successful. Make sure to pack a few snacks and take water along as well as any medications needed during the day.
Extended Travel
Is your client planning an extended visit? There are additional considerations that will ensure a fun and safe excursion. Packing is always a challenge. Our senior clients may have comfort items they enjoy; help find solutions to bring them or a suitable alternative along. Medications are vitally important; pack extra doses just in case. If the older person is flying, ensure they carry on prescription medications versus packed in checked baggage.
Going to the airport can be daunting. Help your client by walking through the process with them. Discuss the check-in and baggage check-in process, the security checkpoint, and boarding the flight. The Transportation Security Authority has particular requirements; research them beforehand to be familiar. Most airlines board in groups; help your client understand the process and identify their assigned boarding group. They may also board early, as many airlines have accommodations for those who may need a little extra time. Print out the boarding pass to avoid any issues accessing it online. Plan to get to the airport two hours early to minimize time stress. These tips will also be helpful if your client is traveling by train.
Hosting Visitors
Having friends and family visit Scottsdale and surrounding areas is a delightful affair. It can also be a lot of work and stressful for the host! Helping your senior client prepare for visitors is sure to be welcome. The host's home does not need to be perfect; there is no need to deep clean the entire house. Help your client lay out the plan for sleeping arrangements and prepare those spaces to receive guests. Freshen bedding and provide towels. Plan meals that are easy to prepare and serve, like a taco or pasta bar. Remind your client that when the guests insist they relax while they take care of the dishes--do it! When visitors take advantage of the sights in and around Apache Junction, declining to accompany them is okay. The goal of guests is to enjoy the visit!
Having the time to explore and catch up with friends and family is a gift. It doesn't need to be full of stress and expectations. Helping your senior clients plan for these activities will enhance their joy. The memories made will be worth it!
