Heart Health for Couples

As we age, heart health is a crucial aspect of our overall well-being. Taking good care of our hearts can prevent a wide range of health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, and heart attacks. Research shows that 80% of married couples share heart disease and risk factors. While this may sound grim, it also means that you and your partner can help each other to be more mindful of your heart health.

Data suggests that risk factors and behaviors track together for couples. So rather than thinking about interventions for individuals, it can be helpful to think about interventions for couples, or even whole families. This month, try thinking about the ways that you and your partner can improve your health and relationship at the same time by engaging in heart healthy activities together.

Exercise is a great way to keep your heart healthy and strong. Couples can exercise together by going for walks, doing yoga or tai chi together, swimming, or taking dance classes. Regular physical activity can lower your blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, and improve overall bodily health.

Couples naturally eat together, so working together to switch to a diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein is a great heart healthy habit. Try out new recipes together and aim to make your meals as colorful as possible with a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. Reduce the amount of processed foods and saturated fats as well to help maintain heart health.
