Adapting Favorite Summer Pastimes for Fall

At Senior Helpers Mesa, we understand the importance of seniors staying active and engaged throughout the year, regardless of the temperature or season. Today, we offer creative ways for seniors to adapt their beloved summer activities to the fall season. From outdoor hobbies like gardening and walking to indoor pastimes, we have tailored suggestions that are both physically and cognitively senior-friendly. Let's take a fun journey into the world of autumnal activities, making the most of the season while promoting health and well-being.

Take Advantage of Fall's Cooler Weather

We all know that fall comes late to south-central Arizona, and with it comes the area's best weather. Here are four pastimes that you can enjoy now that you're not as restricted by scorching summer temperatures!

1. Gardening

Not only is this a delightful way to stay active, but it also provides a sense of accomplishment. As the weather cools, it's the perfect opportunity to plant tender annuals to enjoy now, and bulbs for spring color. Don't forget to prepare your garden for the season's first frost, typically at the end of November!

2. Hiking

You no longer have to limit your explorations to early mornings and evenings! You'll want to dress in layers and wear non-slip shoes to ensure safety and comfort during these walks. Visit Mesa and Alltrails are excellent online resources to find your next hiking adventure.

3. Birdwatching

It's time to dust off the binoculars, grab a field guide, and check off items on your birdwatching bucket list! Check out Birdcast to find out when your area is likely to be a fall migration hotspot. Also, find out if Phoenix's Rio Salado Audubon Center is hosting programs this fall.

4. Photography

The best times to photograph scenics are the "golden hours" just after sunrise and shortly before dusk. Once again, layer up the clothing as it can be chilly, but you won't want to miss the opportunity to capture the gorgeous light on the mountains or fall-blooming flowers.

It's Important to Stay Active, at Any Level

If you're new to the area, or you're a snowbird, you were likely attracted to south-central Arizona by its gorgeous fall weather. It's time to emerge from your air-conditioned home and make the most of it! You don't need to be a pickleball champ to get exercise and fresh air; there are plenty of low-impact activities you can enjoy while fit.  Outdoor activities can help to maintain mobility and strength and promote healthy cardiovascular function. Plus, the pleasure derived from these activities greatly contributes to overall mental well-being.

Remember, no matter how much you exert yourself, it's a good idea to check in with your healthcare provider before embarking on new-to-you strenuous activities.
