What is Companion Care?

For seniors who live alone, the risks of depression and other health issues increase dramatically. Roughly 4 out of 10 Americans in their 70s live alone, and a shocking 6 out of 10 of seniors in their 80s live alone as well. While we would no doubt love to be there all the time for our loved ones who wish to remain independent, that is sadly not a realistic option for many of us. In this case, an option for improving their quality of life is to seek companion care.

Companion care is an aid hired from outside, with the task of providing social, emotional, and physical support to seniors living alone. Companions can help with daily activities, like running errands for them or accompanying them to appointments or on shopping trips. Companions can come every day, a few times a week, or even just once a week, for a few hours at a time or even a full day, depending on the needs of the individual senior.

Home care aides are different from companions, as home care aides are more hands-on. Aides can typically assist with bathing, grooming, hygiene, and similar tasks. In some cases, they can also provide basic medical services, such as assessing vitals and assisting with medications and mobility aids.

The primary role of a companion is to offer social and emotional support. Companions may also offer some light home care services, such as meal preparation and some housekeeping. For seniors unable to go out, they can run their errands for them or accompany and assist them with those able to leave the home.

Companion care provides a lifeline of support and connection for seniors living alone, enhancing their quality of life and offering peace of mind to families. Whether it's assistance with errands, companionship, or light household tasks, our compassionate caregivers are here to help your loved ones stay engaged and supported.
